“Wish You Were Here... See More” sequenced on my computer today and made me think of the pub in the St. John’s Wood tube station for the first time in many years. For awhile, while I was a student at the American school, I was there almost every day. A group of us would show up on lunch break and dutifully down a pint of Guinness. This ritual we called “Belgian Brunch,” which I still don’t understand, as it occurred exclusively on weekdays and the beer is from Ireland. There was an old wooden phone booth in the back of the pub where, over the course of 3 or 4 days, using my 4” lock-blade, I carefully carved LABELLE ’79. The phone booths are gone now, as is the pub. It’s a flower shop today. A sign of more innocent times, no doubt.

A city of spires, Hong Kong is something of a bastard off-spring of Corbusier's “Ville Radieuse.” So different from New York, where buildings are crammed together and saleable footage maximized in every floor plan, the urban fabric of Hong Kong reflects an asceticism that borders on excess: interior space is sacrificed in favor of a largess of open air and an aesthetic of whimsy. Structures whose footprint is the size of an East Village studio rise 30 stories and are perforated by windows on all sides. Staggered about the mountains and valleys in an almost chaotic display, they lend the landscape its fantastic quality; a marvelous mix of nature and artifice, brute force and grace.

No passage, no coming, no departure, no birth or death, no attraction or excitation of a new subject, and consequently no disappearance of the new, no abolition of its novelty in its other absolute novelty that is its empty place or its tomb. No not.

I went to find Time but found it had gone long ago….. Lost Time. Loss of time. What happens when time disappears, when the present is a static, ever-present? Isn’t our sense of loss itself paradoxically lost? And without an acute sense of loss how do we arrive at a certainty of being? Death carried in our hearts lends luminance to life. This surrender to the incessant and the immediate leaves us bereft of intimacy…
